Webinar Recap – Improving App Uptime: Tips from MVP David Klee + Customer Case Study
Application availability is an “across the stack” problem – straddling the app tier, database, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure. DBAs, IT ops, and architects must do more to improve app uptime, particularly at the database tier, where failovers and maintenance cycles disrupt the app, impacting the customer experience.
In this recorded webinar, Microsoft MVP David Klee and Mouser Electronics’ Director of IT Operations Mark Price shared their expertise on:
- Enhancements in clustering and Availability Groups
- Why these solutions can’t enable seamless failover
- How database-level buffering and acceleration improve app availability
- What IT can do across the stack to improve the customer experience
Both David and Mark clearly articulated the need to architect failover across the IT infrastructure stack – whether unplanned or planned. It starts with a clear understanding of availability responsibilities within an IT organization – setting SLAs, knowing RPO/RTO, and having a comprehensive HA/DR strategy. Mark shared how DBAs and networking engineers work side by side along with ScaleArc to ensure zero downtime at Mouser.
Without giving the whole webinar away, let me share some astounding stats, factoids, and perspectives:
- Mark – cost of $250,000 per hour for downtime on Mouser website
- David – VM-level HA won’t protect you especially for planned outages
- Mark – have experienced loads greater than four million transactions, which is why Mouser have multiple database servers with ScaleArc to load balance the traffic
- David – even with AG listener, it is still a single point of failure and even with AG, you still have an availability gap of between 5-10 seconds
- David – cloud providers expect your app to handle availability gaps and only count app outage greater than 10 seconds – it’s not counted against the SLA
- Mark – regarding availability gaps, he noted that public cloud SLAs of 99.9% uptime excludes planned outages
- Mark – for Mouser Electronics eight hours per month downtime translate into a greater than $1.5M in loss revenue opportunity
With ScaleArc’s database load balancing software, you can overcome and be insulated from database outages. The software inserts transparently between your app and your database enabling a zero downtime environment.
