Customer Spotlight: Sazze Smashes Black Friday Records, Revolutionizes eCommerce with ScaleArc
As the busiest shopping day of the year, Black Friday has spawned traditions like doorbuster sales, people camping out in long lines, and unfortunately, a hastening of the traditional Thanksgiving Day family meal. As retailers both large and small embrace the power of the digital era, consumers are finding that they can now take advantage of these Black Friday sales in the comfort of their own home.
eCommerce spending in the US during 2014's Black Friday brought in $1.5B, an increase of 26% from 2013. Key drivers for this amazing growth are the increased penetration of mobile devices (including tablets), a greater share of wallet shift to the web because of online shopping’s convenience, increased spending from younger consumers, and the success of online merchants’ marketing efforts.
Sazze, the parent company to a number of fast-growing eCommerce sites, including DealsPlus, ShopLately, ProGrids, BlackFriday.fm, and Pocketly, was founded with the promise of revolutionizing eCommerce in the mobile and social context, giving the power back to the consumer.
As Sazze began preparations for Black Friday, the team knew its existing database infrastructure would not be able to handle the forecasted traffic surge. Sazze wanted a way to ensure high availability (HA) and easily scale its system to meet the upcoming traffic spike. Sazze also wanted to scale without any application re-engineering.
Sazze brought in Percona and ScaleArc to help accomplish those goals. What Sazze saw was simply amazing. The company was able to process 600M queries on Black Friday, compared to the previous year's 100M queries -- all while maintaining 100% uptime.
