The Nasdaq Challenge: Move an Entire Network with no Downtime
Prasad Parvathaneni already had a tough job – maintain the stock quote service for Nasdaq with no downtime – when it got even harder. He needed to move an entire network of apps and databases to an upgraded network segment, with no downtime.
Prasad and his team schemed on a number of approached. Could they use floating IPs? Could they migrate half the devices one day and the other half the next, maintaining service in between?
The biggest hurdle was how to migrate the databases without impacting the app. Ultimately, they sought a way to break the application dependence on the database – to have a layer of technology between them so they could move them independently of each other.
