ScaleArc increases high availability architecture and enabled database consolidation, simplifying operations and improving customer satisfaction

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – November 15, 2017 – ScaleArc, aleader in database uptime, announced today that Telmate has built ScaleArc software into its telecom environment to improve availability and performance of its communications services. Telmate provides video and audio communications to inmates in correctional facilities, enabling connectivity with loved ones and improved mental health. The technology provider also delivers verification and investigative tools and services that increase physical safety and effectiveness of correctional facilities.

Telmate relies on the MariaDB open source MySQL database to deliver these communications services. All calls go through the database cluster residing in multiple data centers. ScaleArc has alleviated downtime in the environment and increased throughput, enabling better communication services.

“We needed to ensure fault tolerance and better throughput on our mission-critical databases,” said Alex Alexander, database architect at Telmate. “We looked at a number of open source options, but ScaleArc proved to be much more robust and had been deployed in a much larger number of production environments.”

By delivering improved performance, ScaleArc enabled Telmate to consolidate its MySQL infrastructure. Telmate has also benefitted from ScaleArc’s built-in diagnostics to update and fix database problems. “ScaleArc analytics provided valuable insights into our transactions in the changed database environment,” added Alexander.

“Voice and video communications are particularly vulnerable to performance problems,” said Justin Barney, president and CEO of ScaleArc. “Slow service is essentially no service. By improving throughput and streamlining operations on Telmate’s conferencing infrastructure, we’re able to help Telmate deliver vital services to the inmate population.”

ScaleArc Upgrades Its Software to Support Microsoft Azure SQL Database

The latest release of ScaleArc for SQL Server improves uptime, simplifies scale out, and increases performance for applications running on Microsoft Azure DBaaS

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – September 19, 2017 – ScaleArc, a leading provider of database load balancing software, announced today that it has integrated its ScaleArc for SQL Server software with Microsoft Azure SQL Database. Customers of Microsoft Azure Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) software can now benefit from the seamless scale out, faster application performance, and high availability features of the ScaleArc software. With this enhancement, customers can now take advantage of the flexibility and simplicity of Azure SQL Database with no application code changes.

ScaleArc’s database load balancing software deploys between application and Azure SQL Database servers to direct traffic into the database on behalf of the application. The software enables applications to leverage underlying database functionality without programming database logic into the app. ScaleArc also accelerates cloud-native application development, because developers no longer need to program database logic into the application. To fully support enterprise deployments, ScaleArc’s software upgrade also supports Azure Active Directory (AAD) for user authentication.

“Azure SQL Database offers a level of simplicity and ease of administration that dramatically offloads IT resources,” said Justin Barney, president and CEO of ScaleArc. “The challenge has always been whether a company’s applications can take advantage of the flexibility and scalability of these cloud resources. With ScaleArc software, Azure SQL Database customers can now leverage that agility with increased application uptime and performance.”

Joanne Marone, director, database product marketing at Microsoft Corp. added, “When partners like ScaleArc enhance their software to support Microsoft Azure SQL Database, our customers gain access to a broader solution set on the platform. ScaleArc makes it easier for our customers to run database workloads on Azure SQL Database, extending the flexibility and simplicity of our platform to more applications.”

With this latest release, Azure SQL Database customers can leverage ScaleArc software to:

Automatically scale application performance with no code changes by automatically discovering all SQL Database cluster members, leveraging all available readable secondaries, and directing reads vs. writes to the appropriate servers – this capability eliminates the need to code “read intent” connect strings within apps to take advantage of readable secondaries;

Ensure application uptime and performance by monitoring health status and replication lag on all servers in the cluster, sending traffic to the fastest server based on Time to First Byte and avoiding any servers with performance or availability problems;

Eliminate the impact of transient errors by holding persistent client connections and directing queries to the new primary following a database server failover – the ScaleArc software will hold writes in queue until the failover is complete, shielding the application and the customer from seeing application errors;

Avoid downtime from Azure SQL Database maintenance by having ScaleArc front end Azure SQL Database clusters in multiple zones or regions and leveraging the software to route around downed database resources. ScaleArc can detect the new primary and always route the writes appropriately, avoiding potential split-brain issues with Azure SQL Database. Also, ScaleArc’s surge queue holds writes and waits for the server role change to happen, ensuring writes go to the new primary; and

Accelerate application performace by leveraging ScaleArc’s app-transparent caching capabilities – this feature allows Azure SQL database customers to identify queries that are good candidates for caching, add them to the cache via a single mouse click, and expire the cache based on time to live or auto-invalidation when the data changes.

ScaleArc performance testing demonstrates dramatically improved application performance when adding Database Transaction Units (DTUs or eDTUs) to the cluster. Adding a secondary doubled the Query per Second (QPS) throughput and adding two secondaries tripled the QPS rate – all with no changes needed at the application layer.

To learn more about how the ScaleArc software augments Azure IaaS and PaaS offerings, read the Technical Brief on ScaleArc and Azure.

About ScaleArc

ScaleArc enables continuous availability of apps and accelerates the journey to the cloud.
ScaleArc Increases App Performance for Modern SaaS Applications

Enhancements to ScaleArc for SQL Server increase throughput on eCommerce, hosted, and other business-critical applications

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – September 7, 2017 – ScaleArc, a leading provider of database load balancing software, announced today that its latest ScaleArc for SQL Server software enhances its query load balancing capabilities. For the first time, customers can direct and load balance database reads and writes within a transaction, dramatically improving performance for custom and packaged applications without changing a single line of code. Customers are already seeing a 2x to 8x improvement in application performance with this unique functionality.

ScaleArc’s database load balancing software deploys between application and database servers to direct traffic into the database on behalf of the application. The software provides app-transparent failover, zero downtime maintenance, and faster application performance. It also speeds adoption of cloud services for database workloads. Until now, applications have always been forced to direct transactions, which typically combine reads and writes, to the primary server to ensure data integrity. ScaleArc’s patented innovation distinguishes reads vs. writes within transactions, directs the writes to the primary, and load balances the reads across the available secondary servers – all while maintaining ACID compliance.

Distributing database loads within transactions is crucial for accelerating performance of applications built with SQL statements wrapped as transactions, leveraging declarative transaction management patterns. Apps buit with the popular development frameworks Hibernate or Spring and well-known commercial applications such as the eCommerce app Hybris all follow this pattern. Cloud-native development platforms such as Pivotal Cloud Foundry also use wrapped transactions. Without ScaleArc’s ability to distribute database load within transactions, these cloud and other business applications cannot benefit from the additional capacity enabled by adding readable secondaries to a database cluster.

“Our group is chartered with helping organizations increase app and database performance all the time,” said David Klee, Founder at Heraflux and Microsoft Data Platform MVP. “Working with off-the-shelf software presents a significant challenge, since our customers can’t modify the code. We can tune the database and instance up to a certain point, but this this new ScaleArc capability is an incredible new method for improving performance for a broad range of business-critical applications. Scaling a database workload outwards was a strategy simply not available to us in the past for most applications – until now.”

“We continue to broaden the range of applications that can deliver faster performance and higher uptime paired with our software,” said Rajkumar Irudayaraj, vice president of products for ScaleArc. “Our innovation in app-transparent failover, intelligent load distribution, and cloud platform enhancements enables our customers to run their business applications with unparalleled uptime and performance.”

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – May 23, 2017 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, today released the findings of its “Christmas in May Survey,” revealing that the majority of Americans (52 percent) anticipate that a top retailer will have a website outage during the upcoming 2017 holiday shopping season. Walmart was the retailer that took the number one spot on the list of retailers expected to have a major outage this holiday season, according to nearly 1 in 4 Americans (23 percent).

ScaleArc, whose software helps keep retailers’ applications running smoothly, released its survey findings as it unveiled its new 2017 Black Friday prep checklist, designed specifically for online retailers who don’t want to be left behind this holiday season.

“With ScaleArc, we achieved the best Black Friday in our company’s history,” says Craig Thayer, Chief Technology Officer for Sazze, the parent company to a range of eCommerce websites. “We were able to deliver 100% uptime, serving over 3 billion queries and tripling the amount of transactions from the previous year. We also saw a three-month return on investment (ROI), including a 10-day vs. 2-month deployment.”

To help retailers prepare across their full technology stack, ScaleArc solicited best practices from its many retail and SaaS customers who routinely experience significant traffic spikes. ScaleArc compiled these findings in its “
	Black Friday Prep Timeline” infographic.

“The season’s biggest online holiday shopping days – including Green Monday, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Free Shipping Day – make up the Super Bowl of eCommerce,” said Justin Barney, CEO of ScaleArc. “It’s becoming ever more critical that retailers prepare for game day all year long. As we saw with several big-name outages last season, even the smallest misstep in these important preparations can lead to major problems down the road. When web and mobile sites buckle under huge volumes of traffic and experience slowdowns or outages, retailers lose revenue and their brand suffers significant reputation loss.”

Americans Likely to Take Action When a Website Fails
According to ScaleArc’s “Christmas in May Survey,” more than half (52 percent) of Americans anticipate a major website outage from one of the top retailers this holiday shopping season. When asked which retailer will experience an outage, 23 percent of Americans predicted it would be retailer behemoth Walmart.

Americans also called out other top retailers, including:

Best Buy – 17 percent

Macy’s – 16 percent

Target – 16 percent

Amazon – 14 percent

Costco – 7 percent

What’s more, more than half of Americans (51 percent) said they are likely to take action when an online retail site they are visiting experiences a slowdown or an outage. More than 1 in 4 Americans (26 percent) said they would immediately leave the website, and more than 1 in 5 Americans (21 percent) said they would visit a competitor website instead.

Retailer Checklist for Black Friday – A Continuous Process
Along with its survey findings, ScaleArc unveiled a checklist of what retailers need to be doing now to prepare for the upcoming holiday shopping season – the retail industry’s busiest time of the year for web traffic.

Retailers understand the criticality of preparing for the year’s busiest season, in which many companies generate more than 30 percent of their yearly sales. Despite this preparation, however, every Black Friday season spawns a list of notable failures, with frustrated shoppers, ugly headlines, and revenue losses.

ScaleArc compiled this chronological checklist to help IT and Ops teams reach targets throughout all 12 months, preparing for extreme scalability and continuous IT operations when Black Friday hits. Earlier research on application downtime highlighted that certain IT resources, including the database, often emerge as the weakest link in the technology chain. You can get more details by downloading the “
	Black Friday Prep Checklist.”

May/June

Add new features and new technology. If you have major infrastructure or architecture upgrades to do, now is the time. Even if these features and technologies do not apply specifically to Black Friday efforts, you need to get them into play so you know how they affect the entire system.

Work towards a goal of zero downtime. Many Black Friday outages result from the database getting overwhelmed. Along with architecting for seamless and immediate database failover, you also need the application to work effectively with that database failover to keep customers logged in and productive during a database outage.

Review your infrastructure with an eye toward avoiding downtime from maintenance windows. This approach includes maintenance for adding new services. Regardless of how well you’ve prepared, some element of infrastructure will need a last-minute change. Architect applications, the network, and the data tier to support zero-downtime maintenance so you can make last-minute adjustments without impacting your customers.

July

Increase site performance. It’s time to rev up the engine that will boost site performance to easily handle Black Friday traffic loads, delivering consistent and excellent customer experience. When it comes to databases, application performance bottlenecks tend to fall into three main categories: 1. poor query performance, 2. lack of concurrent capacity to handle high user loads, and 3. connection pooling / management issues. Look for technologies that can address these challenges.

August/September

Implement the system freeze and test all components. August is the time to stop making changes to your infrastructure. While most organizations have to occasionally accept last-minute updates beyond this point in time, most components should enter a freeze now.

This time is also good for delving into analytics again to see where you have potential weaknesses in the system. Start applying load tests to see how all your infrastructure changes – particular at the data tier – are holding up. Testing at high load now gives you time to address any issues you uncover.

October

See how natural load increases are affecting your system. By early October, you’ll likely start to see traffic increase on a daily basis. Natural traffic growth can provide a better test backdrop than the load testing you engineer because it typically reveals surprises. Your Black Friday preparations should all be in place by now.

November

Analyze the traffic. Organizations with high Black Friday loads report Black Friday traffic being a 10X to 15X spike over rest-of-year numbers. Some organizations see as much as a 5X spike on Black Friday compared to Thanksgiving Thursday – it can be a dramatic traffic ramp.

Make any last-minute adjustments. If you’ve been leveraging analytics throughout the year, any last-minute adjustments should be minor and most likely based on an unexpected traffic increase in October that signals higher traffic rates on Black Friday.

December

You made it! Wipe your brow, get a little sleep, and evaluate what just happened – it’s time for the post-mortem. You’ll need to replace band-aids with long-term fixes, identify your major infrastructure projects for Q1, and build a plan for increasing scalability next year.

ScaleArc for MySQL for Amazon Aurora Named
New Product of the Year in Software for Cloud Infrastructure.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – May 11, 2017 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, was named the winner of a Gold Stevie® Award in the 15th Annual American Business Awards today. The company’s software, ScaleArc for MySQL for Amazon Aurora, took top honors as New Product of the Year for Software for Cloud Infrastructure.

Nicknamed the Steviesfor the Greek word meaning “crowned,” the American Business Awards are the nation’s premier business awards program. More than 190 professionals worldwide participated in the judging process to select this year’s Stevie Award winners, selecting from among 3,600 nominations submitted by organizations of all sizes and in virtually every industry.

ScaleArc for MySQL for Amazon Aurora

ScaleArc’s database load balancing software deploys between application and database servers to improve uptime and performance for applications. The software directs traffic into the database on behalf of the application, providing app-transparent failover, zero downtime maintenance, and faster performance – all without any code changes to the application.

The judges’ recognition of the ScaleArc software included:

“Seamless aggregation of capacity is great, even better is avoiding dev time recoding. A very useful market solution!”

“A key element is that ScaleArc’s database load balancing software enables enterprises to run database workloads in the cloud without application changes and without compromising uptime and performance. Cost and time savings along with revenue enhancements were demonstrated.”

	“Excellent product.”

By supporting Amazon Aurora integration, ScaleArc enables Aurora customers to:

Automatically discover an Amazon Aurora cluster and avoid manually configuring cluster details within the ScaleArc software, simplifying deployment;

Detect role changes on an Amazon Aurora cluster, allowing ScaleArc software to automatically write to the primary or master files and read secondaries or slaves files when Amazon Aurora changes the role of servers in a cluster;

Enable app-transparent database failover, so that ScaleArc software will detect a failover in progress, hold transactions in its queue and drain the queue when Amazon Aurora completes the failover, shielding the application and the customer from seeing application errors;

Support geo-aware and replication-aware load balancing, enabling ScaleArc software to optimize performance by sending traffic to the best-performing server, based on time to first byte;

Co-locate resources to ensure high application performance, allowing ScaleArc software to communicate with an Amazon Aurora cluster to ensure the ScaleArc software deploys in the same region as the cluster to avoid wide areanetwork (WAN) latency from slowing application throughput; and

Monitor database server health and replication lag, so that ScaleArc software can call from internal AWS tables to understand whether any database servers are behind in their replication performance to avoid serving stale data.

“We’re proud to have the ScaleArc software recognized as a Gold Stevie Award Winner and New Product of the Year,” said Justin Barney, CEO of ScaleArc. “Many enterprises today are migrating ever more critical applications to the cloud, and moving a workload – particularly a database workload – from an on-prem deployment to the cloud is challenging. ScaleArc’s database load balancing software enables enterprises to run database workloads in the cloud without application changes and without compromising uptime and performance.”

“Each year the judges find the quality and variety of the nominations to be greater than the year before. The 2017 competition was intense, and every organization that has won should be proud,” said Michael Gallagher, president and founder of the Stevie Awards.

ScaleArc Increases App Performance with Enhanced Database Load Balancing Software

Updated release of ScaleArc for MySQL augments load distribution for faster throughput and adds support for latest version of MySQL open source protocol

PERCONA LIVE, SANTA CLARA, Calif. – April 25, 2017 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, announced today at the Percona Live conference that it has updated its ScaleArc for MySQL software. The latest release enhances the query load balancing capabilities of the software and supports MySQL 5.7.

ScaleArc’s database load balancing software deploys between application and database servers to direct traffic into the database on behalf of the application. The software provides app-transparent failover, zero downtime maintenance and faster application performance.

ScaleArc has augmented the query load balancing functionality to support the distribution of reads and writes within a transaction. Earlier versions of the software sent all transactions to the master server, and, as a result, applications that had the majority of queries wrapped in transactions could not take full advantage of ScaleArc’s load distribution capabilities. Now, all applications can leverage readable secondaries – called slaves in MySQL databases – to offload the master and increase application performance.

ScaleArc also updated its ScaleArc for MySQL software to support the latest release from the MySQL community, MySQL 5.7. This integration extends ScaleArc’s uptime, performance and scalability features to customers running this software.

“ScaleArc’s support for automatic read/write split has enabled us to scale out our MySQL databases with no code changes,” said Craig Thayer, CTO for eCommerce company Sazze. “Since a lot of application frameworks use wrapped transactions, especially in the eCommerce industry, this capability to support read/write split for wrapped transactions means many more companies can take advantage of ScaleArc’s automatic scale out capabilities.”

These enhancements join ScaleArc’s recent update to enable compatibility with Amazon Aurora. The update leveraged Amazon Aurora’s application programming interfaces (APIs) to apply ScaleArc’s uptime and performance capabilities to Amazon Aurora’s environment.

“As we innovate with every release, we extend the landscape of applications that can benefit from the improved availability and performance our software delivers,” said Rajkumar Irudayaraj, vice president of products for ScaleArc. “Our load balancing capabilities, combined with app-transparent failover, enable our customers to deliver the robust, consumer-grade applications that today’s customers demand.”

Percona Live attendees can visit ScaleArc at Booth #416 to learn more about these new capabilities and how ScaleArc enables better application uptime and performance.

	About Percona Live

The Percona Live Open Source Database Conference is the premier event for the diverse and active open source database community, as well as businesses that develop and use open source database software. The conferences have a technical focus with an emphasis on the core topics of MySQL, MongoDB, and other open source databases. Tackling subjects such as analytics, architecture and design, security, operations, scalability and performance, Percona Live provides in-depth discussions for your high availability, IoT, cloud, big data and other changing business needs.

ScaleArc Selects DealerSocket’s Michael Atkins as “Uptime Hero”

Atkins Earns Top ScaleArc Customer Award Recognition for Continued Application Availability During Database Failover and Zero Downtime Maintenance

Santa Clara, Calif. – Dec. 15, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software that provides continuous availability for applications, today announced the latest winner of its Uptime Hero Award. Michael Atkins, Director of IT Operations at DealerSocket, leads the team that manages uptime and performance for the company’s SaaS offering for auto dealerships around the globe. Atkins has helped DealerSocket scale infrastructure, rebuild its data platform, and upgrade its database infrastructure to vastly reduce downtime – all to keep up with the company’s incredible growth. For his commitment to all of these uptime initiatives, ScaleArc is proud to honor Michael Atkins as a ScaleArc Uptime Hero.

DealerSocket’s SaaS offering empowers more than 10,000 auto dealerships and 300,000 users across the United States, Canada and Australia. Dealers use the platform to improve profitability through a fully integrated suite of marketing, sales, service, customer experience, dealer management system (DMS), data mining and inventory management solutions. DealerSocket is on the forefront of the SaaS revolution, offering its customers the “Salesforce of dealerships.”

“Car dealerships, just like every other industry, are under pressure to embrace digital transformation and data analytics, but they can’t do it themselves,” said Atkins. “They are turning to SaaS offerings to give them the rich insights into their customers and service them in a more tailored way.”

Atkins, who has run IT operations for DealerSocket since 2011, manages the SaaS platform with a team of nine. The deployment includes 80 SQL servers running 4000 customer databases, and Atkins and his team must ensure consistent uptime and performance.

Recently, DealerSocket’s customer base has grown, and given the worldwide locations of auto dealers on their platform, there is no time for downtime. “If we’re not running, our dealers’ businesses aren’t running,” said Atkins.

Atkins and his team scaled Dealersocket’s infrastructure to keep up with its incredible growth but found the toughest infrastructure piece to bullet proof was the database. To vastly reduce downtime, DealerSocket rebuilt its data platform, upgraded its database to support scaled out infrastructure, and added ScaleArc, database load balancing software that ensures that apps are never down, always fast, and scale anywhere.

Atkins deployed ScaleArc and immediately saw the uptime impact. “We had instances of database failover during our business hours and no customers noticed,” says Atkins. “That is huge for us.”

DealerSocket’s implementation of ScaleArc has allowed the company to take advantage of:

ScaleArc Holiday Travel Survey: Nearly Half of Americans Fear Underperforming Airline Booking Apps and Sites Will Hurt Their Holiday Spirit

One in three Americans say airline booking apps underperform; 42 percent worry this downtime may negatively impact their holidays, including cutting into time with loved ones

Santa Clara, Calif. – Dec. 13, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software that provides continuous availability for applications, has released the results of its 2016 Holiday Travel Survey. The survey found that a full third of Americans have experienced underperforming airline booking sites and apps, and that Millennials are the least forgiving when it comes to inadequate site and app performance. Many Americans even fear that airline database downtime could result in less time with loved ones or flight delays.

Americans to airlines: No patience for slow sites and apps

One in three Americans say they have experienced airline booking sites running slowly or going down in the past year; nine percent say it happened more times than they could count.

Which booking sites are Americans most worried will go down over the holidays? It varies by region:

When airline booking sites and apps underperform, 68 percent of Americans admit to taking retaliatory action. Most commonly, this includes booking through a different site (31 percent) and flying with a competitor (17 percent). However, nine percent of Americans say that if an airline booking site were performing poorly or stopped working while they were booking a flight, they might never fly with that airline again.

Those most offended by underperforming airline booking sites and apps were older Millennials (25-34 year-olds), who were most likely to book through a different site (39 percent), fly with a competitor (19 percent) and never fly with that airline again (10 percent). They were also most likely to bash the airline on social media (7 percent).

Millennials are dreaming of a white Christmas (or Chanukah, or Kwanzaa)

Millennials, more so than any other age group, are relying on airline sites and apps to get them home for the holidays. Among Millennials (18-34 year-olds), 56 percent said the performance of an airline’s online site or mobile app was important for ensuring a happy holiday for their family, as did 48 percent of Gen Xers (35-44 year-olds) and half of Baby Boomers (45-64 year-olds). Seniors (adults 65+) were less concerned (37 percent).

What consequence of airline database downtime, in particular, would hurt their holiday spirit? Americans are united in their top fears: that time with loved ones will be cut short (21 percent), that they might miss spending holidays with loved ones altogether (19 percent) or that they might suffer flight delays (18 percent). Overall, 42 percent agree that airline database downtime would have some negative impact on their holiday.

“As we’ve seen in recent years, airline outages can cause massive problems for Americans, including thousands of grounded flights, cancellations and delays,” said Justin Barney, CEO of ScaleArc. “But what Americans might not realize is that when they can’t reach an airline website or app during a busy time, it’s the database that has been overwhelmed. While scaling infrastructure for big traffic increases is fairly easy, the hard part is scaling the database. The biggest technical challenge is that applications have to know how to leverage an expanded database. That takes time—it can’t be done in rapid response in the middle of a website meltdown during the holiday travel season.”

Barney went on to note that airlines and other enterprises have a couple choices for how to adopt these modern, scaled databases. They can recode their apps, teaching those apps how to send some traffic to additional database servers to spread out the load, or they can use technology like they have for their web server farms—load-balancing technology—in front of their databases and have that software redirect the database load automatically.

“Any infrastructure change like this takes time to implement and time to test,” said Barney. “Using an approach that eliminates code changes greatly reduces the time to implementation, but airlines that have had meltdowns in years past should take time now to better prepare for the busy travel in December.”

	Survey Methodology

The survey was conducted in the United States by ScaleArc in November 2016 among 1,008 adults ages 18 and older.

ScaleArc’s Database Load Balancing Software Now Compatible with Amazon Aurora

Upgrade extends ScaleArc’s application uptime, scale-out and performance benefits for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Relational Database Services (Amazon RDS) Platform-as-a-Service offering

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – November 29, 2016 – ScaleArc, a leading provider of database load balancing software, announced today that it has made its software compatible with Amazon Aurora. Customers of Amazon Aurora can now benefit from the seamless failover, faster application performance, and other capabilities of the ScaleArc software. With this update, customers can enhance the performance and availability of their critical applications.

ScaleArc’s database load balancing software deploys between application and Amazon Aurora database servers to direct traffic into the database on behalf of the application. ScaleArc has now engineered its software to work with Amazon Aurora, a MySQL-compatible relational database engine that combines the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open source databases. The ScaleArc software leverages Amazon Aurora’s application programming interfaces (APIs) to apply ScaleArc’s functionality to Amazon Aurora’s environment.

Now Amazon Aurora customers can leverage ScaleArc software to:

Automatically discover an Amazon Aurora cluster and avoid manually configuring cluster details within the ScaleArc software, simplifying deployment;

Detect role changes on an Amazon Aurora cluster, allowing ScaleArc software to automatically write to the primary or master files and read secondaries or slaves files when Amazon Aurora changes the role of servers in a cluster;

Enable app-transparent database failover, so that ScaleArc software will detect a failover in progress, hold transactions in its queue, and drain the queue when Amazon Aurora completes the failover, shielding the application and the customer from seeing application errors;

Support geo-aware and replication-aware load balancing, enabling ScaleArc software to optimize performance by sending traffic to the best-performing server, based on time to first byte;

Co-locate resources to ensure high application performance, allowing ScaleArc software to communicate with an Amazon Aurora cluster to ensure the ScaleArc software deploys in the same region as the cluster to avoid wide area network (WAN) latency from slowing application throughput; and

Monitor database server health and replication lag, so that ScaleArc software can call from internal AWS tables to understand whether any database servers are behind in their replication performance to avoid serving stale data.

As a customer of both AWS and ScaleArc, we appreciate the ability to leverage the ScaleArc features on AWS,” said John Dohm, CTO of Sixgill. “The simplicity of initiating services on Amazon RDS together with ScaleArc’s application uptime and performance enhancements improves the availability of our sensor-based location services application. Since we can’t control maintenance windows in the cloud, the ability of the ScaleArc software to eliminate downtime during maintenance further increases our application uptime, and ScaleArc’s caching improves performance with no code changes.”

Sixgill conducted benchmark testing on the performance of ScaleArc software on Amazon Aurora, and the test results demonstrated that ScaleArc:

Enables automatic read/write split

Load balances read traffic to boost overall capacity

Increases query per second processing by more than 400%

Adds no latency to application performance

Customers are drawn to Amazon Aurora because of its focus on improving speed and availability of database services in a cloud environment,” said Justin Barney, president and CEO of ScaleArc. “With ScaleArc software, AWS customers can now increase their application uptime and performance capabilities of its database platform.”

About ScaleArc

ScaleArc enables consumer-grade apps for today’s digital business – apps that are never down, are always fast, and scale anywhere.
ScaleArc Updates its Database Load Balancing Software to Support Microsoft SQL Server 2016

ScaleArc Software Also Adds Support for Active Directory Integration as it Simplifies SQL Server Upgrades and Complements AlwaysOn Functionality,

PASS Summit 2016, Seattle – October 26, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, announced today that the latest release of its ScaleArc for SQL Server software supports Microsoft SQL Server 2016. As with previous versions of SQL Server, the ScaleArc software integrates with key functions in SQL 2016, such as AlwaysOn, to extend its capabilities. The latest ScaleArc software also provides support for Active Directory (AD) integration, to simplify user authentication.

The ScaleArc software makes it easier for enterprises to take advantage of the power of Modern SQL. The software:

avoids application errors and downtime during database failover

enables zero downtime maintenance for SQL Server clusters

supports SQL Server scale out, with readable secondaries, with no application code changes

supports full asset utilization across a SQL Server cluster with geo-aware load balancing

integrates with AlwaysOn, clustering, mirroring, and other replication technologies

provides connection management and app-transparent caching to improve SQL Server performance

The addition of AD support enables the following advantages:

allows the ScaleArc software to deploy as a read-only domain controller for synchronization with users registered in AD, simplifying the process of authenticating users within ScaleArc

avoids expensive login negotiations during high volume connection spikes to the database servers, yet provides the same level of security that users get access to via SQL Server

supports automatic fetching of SQL user credentials from AD so ScaleArc automatically extends appropriate user access control

The enhancements the ScaleArc software extends to SQL Server earned ScaleArc Microsoft Partner of the Year Finalist for Data Platform this year.

“With its strong market momentum and leading position in IT analyst reports, SQL Server 2016 is a compelling platform for enterprises to architect a more robust data tier,” said Justin Barney, president and CEO of ScaleArc. “Working together, ScaleArc and Microsoft can ensure that enterprises adopt Modern SQL, on premise or in Azure, faster and with reduced IT effort. Testimony from joint customers including Nasdaq, Dell, and Microsoft IT highlights the benefits of our combined solutions.”

You can learn more about how ScaleArc software pairs with SQL Server 2016 by going to http://www.scalearc.com/microsoft-sql-server-2016.

ScaleArc is exhibiting this week at PASS Summit 2016, where more than 4000 data professionals gather to hear from industry leaders, get in-depth training, and learn deployment best practices. You can see the software in action at ScaleArc Booth #108.

About ScaleArc

ScaleArc enables consumer-grade apps for today’s digital business – apps that are never down, are always fast, and scale anywhere.
ScaleArc IT Survey Reveals ‘Consumer Grade’ Defines the Gold Standard for Enterprise Apps

Enterprise IT Practitioners Cite Higher Uptime and Performance on Consumer Apps vs. Apps They Develop Themselves

Santa Clara, Calif. – August 23, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, announced today the findings of its annual survey of IT decision makers. The primary finding is that consumer software is seen as more reliable than enterprise software and that consumer grade is the new standard for apps today.

“It is clear that consumer grade is the new enterprise grade,” said Justin Barney, president and CEO of ScaleArc. “Even IT decision makers who build enterprise apps recognize that they, and the general public, have a better experience on their personal apps than their work apps. We’ve all lost patience with websites and apps that don’t offer optimal performance.”

Organizations responsible for building enterprise applications have also felt the additional pressures of meeting higher demands from its users.

“We’ve seen the shift in expectations in our customer base,” said Michael Atkins, IT operations for DealerSocket. “People are mobile all the time and always connected, so whether it’s a work app or a personal app, no one has the patience for it to be slow or – worse yet – offline. That experience has raised the bar for the service level we have to deliver with our enterprise SaaS offering.”

Setting a New Performance Standard

More than three-quarters (78 percent) of the IT decision makers participating in the survey agreed that consumer grade is the new standard for apps today. The reasons cited for the shift were:

Better interfaces (54 percent)

Less likely to be sluggish (32 percent)

Less downtime (31 percent)

Survey respondents stated that performance requirements of consumer apps are higher because of their greater visibility (52 percent) and the need for them to make money (28 percent). Interestingly, as mentioned previously, almost one-third (31 percent) of the IT decision makers polled believe that companies developing consumer apps attract more talented people to design them, another reason behind their superior performance.

The Reliability and Performance of Consumer Apps

The vast majority (81 percent) of survey respondents said that consumer software is more reliable than enterprise software, with better software performance being a primary factor. More specifically, they stated that:

Consumer apps have faster performance (33 percent)

Consumer apps have zero downtime (26 percent)

Consumer apps have fewer crashes (26 percent)

Nearly 40 percent of the IT decision makers who responded to ScaleArc’s survey work for companies that deliver apps or services for other companies. “However, even this group, responsible for SLAs in excess of 99.99 percent, overwhelmingly said they find consumer apps to be more reliable than enterprise apps,” Barney explained.

Using Consumer Sites and Software

Most IT workers surveyed said they switch to consumer software products when enterprise software doesn’t work. Consumer products they turn to include Skype (37 percent), Dropbox (34 percent), Google Docs (34 percent) and Google Drive (34 percent).

Roughly 95 percent of the respondents said they would be negatively impacted if a website were slow or had downtime, with popular consumer sites easily beating out enterprise sites in terms of the impact of poor performance. Nearly 80 percent of the respondents would be impacted if Google were down, and 26 percent would be impacted if Facebook were down or slow. In contrast, only 18 percent of respondents noted they would be impacted if a business application such as web conferencing didn’t perform.

Survey Methodology and Respondents

ScaleArc’s annual survey polled 528 IT decision makers who work for companies that primarily deliver apps or services for other businesses (39 percent) or for consumers (32 percent).

About ScaleArc

ScaleArc enables consumer-grade apps for today’s digital business – apps that are never down, are always fast, and scale anywhere.
ScaleArc Summer Blockbuster Survey: 90 Percent of Americans Demand Zero Downtime of Movie Ticketing Websites and Apps

Majority of Americans plan to purchase movie tickets using websites or apps because they hate waiting in line

Santa Clara, Calif. – June 30, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, has released the results of its Summer Blockbuster Survey. The study, which examined Americans’ attitudes and behavior when it comes to purchasing movie tickets this summer, found that more than half of Americans (57 percent) plan to buy movie tickets using websites or apps to avoid waiting in line at the theatre. Sixty-two percent of Americans said they would be upset if they were purchasing movie tickets and the site or app went down, and 90 percent agreed that movie ticketing websites and apps should have no downtime this summer.

ScaleArc’s survey also revealed which summer blockbusters Americans are the most excited to see. Finding Dory tops the list of movies Americans are most excited to see this summer (44 percent), followed by the new Star Trek movie (33 percent) and Jason Bourne 4 (32 percent).

“As Americans head to the theatres this summer, sites and apps selling tickets to the hottest releases of the season must be ready to handle the huge demand that comes with it, or they risk losing customers and revenue,” said Justin Barney, President and CEO of ScaleArc. “Our study confirmed that Americans demand movie ticketing websites and apps that are never down and always fast – especially during the peak summer blockbuster season – and many Americans won’t hesitate to move on to a competitor website or app if they aren’t satisfied with their performance.”

Americans hate to wait, and what industry they work in determines how much

According to the survey, Americans’ #1 reason for buying movie tickets using websites or apps is that they hate waiting in line (57 percent). They also purchase tickets using websites or apps because they like knowing they have tickets to a film at their preferred screening time (47 percent) and like being able to pick out seats in advance (38 percent).

Sixty-two percent of Americans would be disgruntled if they were purchasing movie tickets and the website or app went down, and nearly all (90 percent) agreed that movie ticketing websites and apps should have zero downtime this summer.

ScaleArc’s study revealed that 39 percent of Americans who encounter problems while trying to purchase movie tickets using websites or apps will be quick to move on to a competitor. Members of the tech community were particularly intolerant of digital performance issues – 45 percent said they would visit a competitor site or app if a movie reservation system was experiencing downtime.

Other top responses to encountering downtime on a movie ticketing website/app included:

Be forced to wait in line—44 percent

Choose a different theatre—36 percent

Never again choose the reservation site—23 percent

Finding Dory tops list of movies driving online tickets sales

In spite of viral hype, Americans won’t be rushing out to see Ghostbusters this summer. Instead, when asked for which movies they’ll be going online to purchase tickets, Americans first said Finding Dory and then Star Trek.

Top five movies Americans are excited to see this summer:

Finding Dory—42 percent

Star Trek—33 percent

Jason Bourne 4—32 percent

Suicide Squad—29 percent

Independence Day 2—24 percent

Independence Day 2 moved up the list considerably amongst Americans working in tech, who picked it as their first choice (43 percent) followed by Star Trek (38 percent).

With a vote of 8 percent each, the fewest Americans are excited to see The Conjuring 2 and Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates.

The importance of avoiding downtime for consumer services

ScaleArc is no stranger to the concept of critical apps that simply cannot tolerate downtime. ScaleArc’s software protects applications and websites from downtime, even if the database driving those services goes down. ScaleArc enables a zero downtime environment for services companies including Dell (computer sales), Spectocor (cardiac monitoring), and Mouser Electronics (eCommerce). Other ScaleArc customers provide movie ticket sales, airline ticket sales, and financial and credit rating services.

ScaleArc Software Enhancements Bring AlwaysOn-like Seamless Application Failover to SQL Server Mirroring Clusters

ScaleArc’s application-transparent failover now available for Microsoft Standard Edition customers

Santa Clara, Calif. – May 11, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, today announced its latest version of ScaleArc for SQL Server broadens support for seamless application failover. The new software extends ScaleArc’s patented technology to support application-transparent failover on SQL Server mirroring clusters.

The ScaleArc software enables customers to deliver zero downtime environments, shielding applications from database downtime. The technology holds database requests in a queue during database failover and then forwards the requests once the failover is complete. As a result, users of ScaleArc-enabled applications and websites see delay but not errors during failover.

ScaleArc for SQL Server has supported this application-transparent failover for AlwaysOn Availability Groups for years – this latest software release now extends those capabilities to SQL Server mirroring clusters. Now customers of Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition can access the kind of seamless failover that used to require Enterprise Edition and AlwaysOn.

Given the widespread deployment of SQL Server Standard Edition, a substantial number of enterprises stand to gain significant application uptime advantages, said industry watchers.

“Far more customers use SQL Server Standard Edition and cannot leverage AlwaysOn Availability Groups,” said David Klee, founder and president of Heraflux Technologies. “ScaleArc’s seamless failover capabilities are impressive, and the company will enhance application uptime options for thousands of businesses with this release.”

“Supporting auto failover for SQL Mirroring without requiring any application changes is a powerful advantage for our customers,” said Rajkumar Irudayaraj, VP of product management for ScaleArc. “With this release, our customers can now set up a standard SQL Server as their Mirror backup and provide full failover support with SQL Mirroring, giving them zero downtime for both new and legacy applications very easily.”

Thayer earns ScaleArc Customer Award for sustaining 10x traffic load on Black Friday with no downtime and high website performance.

Percona Live, Santa Clara, Calif. – April 19, 2016 – ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, today announced the winner of its quarterly Uptime Hero award. Craig Thayer, CTO for Sazze, has architected its multiple eCommerce website properties to withstand dramatic surges in database workload, support active/active operations, and leverage zero-downtime maintenance. For delivering on all these uptime initiatives, ScaleArc is proud to name Thayer a ScaleArc Uptime Hero.

Sazze is the parent company to several eCommerce websites, including DealsPlus, BlackFriday.fm, Whym, Pocketly, and Progrids. The sites come under significant traffic load pressure every Black Friday. Last November, Sazze’s properties supported four million users running three billion queries on Black Friday. Sazze has also created the Black Friday Ads mobile application, and it is consistently a top Apple Appstore app for Black Friday.

ScaleArc has helped Sazze thrive during four Black Fridays, delivering continuous website uptime and real-time visibility for its Percona XtraDB Cluster/Galera deployment. Key metrics for Sazze’s Black Friday 2015 results include:

2.5x higher traffic than Black Friday 2014

4 million users, vs. typical day of 400K

3 billion queries, of which ScaleArc cached 70%

80% mobile traffic vs. typical 50%

Thayer often calls Black Friday the Super Bowl of eCommerce. “The preparations, the importance of the event, the stresses on our systems – they all max out for Black Friday,” said Thayer. “ScaleArc gives us high reliability and easy scalability for the part of our infrastructure that’s the most difficult to harden. It’s thanks to ScaleArc that, despite massive traffic surges this past holiday shopping season, we had no outages and no fire drills.”

“We have enjoyed partnering with Craig Thayer for the past four years as he’s worked to protect Sazze’s web properties against application downtime,” said ScaleArc CEO Justin Barney. “He has pushed our development, recommended product improvements, and put our failover capabilities to test – in short, he’s made our technology better. I’m thrilled to see Craig named as our latest Uptime Hero.”

	ScaleArc’s
Uptime Hero customer award program celebrates IT innovators who deliver continuous app availability in spite of database traffic surges or planned or unplanned downtime.

ScaleArc Delivers Application Uptime and Performance for Healthcare Technology Leader Spectocor

The ScaleArc software ensures doctors and patients get continuous access to the company’s cardiac monitoring application

April 5, 2016 – Santa Clara, CA – ScaleArc today announced that Spectocor has selected ScaleArc software to ensure availability and performance for its cardiac monitoring software. The company works with physician partners to drive new levels of patient care, pairing advanced monitoring hardware with sophisticated data analytics for faster, more accurate medical insights.

The Spectocor monitoring solution captures and processes 500 data points per second for each patient, analyzing the input for anomalies, alerting doctors, and delivering a much richer data set.

“We can’t miss a beat in delivering our reports to doctors, and we’ve got to do it at hyperscale,” said Joe Khan, CIO for Spectocor. “ScaleArc is vital to our ability to deliver application uptime, maintain app performance despite data hypergrowth, and distribute traffic across databases in multiple data centers. Given the real-time nature of this application, our ability to take resources offline for patching or other support needs is invaluable.”

Khan’s team is also benefitting from the actionable insights enabled through the ScaleArc analytics. “Our technical talent has to span data science, machine learning, application development, and system maintenance,” notes Khan. “Having the ScaleArc software highlight problem queries and simplify troubleshooting lets us maximize our team’s productivity.”

Spectocor runs the ScaleArc for SQL Server product line. The software enables:

app-transparent failover, within or between data centers

easy scale out, with automatic read/write split, dynamic load balancing, and query routing

faster application performance, with connection multiplexing and caching

faster application development, avoiding programming for database scale out

	About Spectocor

Spectocor, the leading cardiac monitoring solution, provides support to both physicians and patients to serve as an extension of their quality care. With specialization in the highly competitive market of healthcare technology, Spectocor strives to continually improve cardiac monitoring products and services in order to deliver a higher standard of analytics, quality assurance, and ultimately, a better patient experience and outcome. http://www.spectocor.com/

ScaleArc Announces $20 Million Investment from Bain Capital Ventures

The Series C-1 growth round enables ScaleArc to invest in sales and marketing activities to capitalize on the market opportunity for enabling zero downtime in a database environment

January 19, 2016 - Santa Clara, Calif. - ScaleArc, the leading provider of database load balancing software, announced it has completed a $20 million Series C-1 financing round. Led by Bain Capital Ventures, the investment will be used to fund company growth, including increased hiring as well as sales and marketing initiatives. ScaleArc’s existing investors – Accel Partners, Trinity Ventures, and Nexus Ventures – also participated in the round.

ScaleArc enables companies to deliver zero downtime for apps in a database environment. ScaleArc’s software drops in transparently between apps and database, providing an abstraction layer that shields apps from database failures, simplifies scale out, and increases app performance. The ScaleArc software also simplifies the process of moving enterprise workloads into the cloud. ScaleArc enables enterprises running SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle to maintain seamless application uptime, despite outages at the database tier, avoiding both planned and unplanned downtime. The company has enjoyed recognition from Gartner as a Cool Vendor and for delivering technology key to enabling IT Service Continuity.

The additional funding will help ScaleArc grow its global operations, and is a testimony to the enterprise customer traction that ScaleArc has experienced in the last year. ScaleArc supports critical apps for Dell, Vitacost (a division of Kroger), Axcess Financial, snapdeal, Zos Communications (running on the Amazon cloud) and Stitch Labs.

“We’re investing to fuel ScaleArc’s continued growth and expansion,” said Salil Deshpande, Managing Director at Bain Capital. “Data access layers that break the 1:1 tie between applications and databases have been a best-practice for years. But a completely transparent network-level proxy that improves performance, uptime, scale, and resilience for multiple SQL databases is really hard to build. ScaleArc has done it.”

“We’re proud of our progress in establishing a new architecture for application uptime,” said Justin Barney, CEO of ScaleArc. “Recognition by a firm as esteemed as Bain Capital affirms the product category we’re building, and this investment positions us to accelerate our ability to make enterprises more resilient, adaptive, and responsive.”

About ScaleArc

ScaleArc is the leading provider of database load balancing software that provides continuous availability for all applications.
